Description

Sand Ginger (Kaempferia galanga), also known as aromatic ginger or kencur, is a low-growing tropical perennial prized for its culinary, medicinal, and ecological functions. Native to Southeast Asia, it thrives in warm, humid climates with well-drained, fertile soils, preferring part shade to full sun. In Australia, it can be grown successfully in tropical and subtropical regions, or in protected spots in temperate gardens.

Unlike taller gingers, Sand Ginger forms a compact, ground-hugging plant with broad, rounded leaves that emerge seasonally. Beneath the soil, it develops small, aromatic rhizomes with a distinctive peppery, earthy fragrance. These rhizomes are used widely in Southeast Asian cooking to flavour curries, soups, and rice dishes. The flavour is stronger and more resinous than common ginger, often described as a mix of ginger, pepper, and camphor.

In traditional medicine, Sand Ginger has been used anecdotally to support digestion, ease inflammation, and relieve respiratory congestion. Some studies suggest antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, but scientific research remains limited.

In permaculture gardens, Sand Ginger functions as an edible groundcover, helping to stabilise soil, reduce evaporation, and provide useful biomass. Its seasonal dormancy (dying back in the dry or cool season) makes it well-suited to tropical and monsoonal garden designs where periods of intense growth are followed by rest.
