Description
Native Violet (Viola hederacea) is a delicate, spreading perennial groundcover indigenous to Australia, prized for its charming violet and white flowers and its role in creating living carpets in gardens. Naturally found in moist, sheltered environments such as rainforest margins and creek banks, it thrives in part shade to full shade and prefers rich, moist, well-drained soils, though it can tolerate occasional dry spells once established.
The small, heart-shaped leaves form a dense mat that protects soil from erosion, suppresses weeds, and conserves moisture — making Native Violet an excellent choice for permaculture and regenerative gardens. Flowering through much of the year, particularly in spring and summer, it attracts beneficial insects such as native bees and hoverflies, supporting overall garden biodiversity.
