Description

Moses in the Cradle (Tradescantia spathacea), also known as Boat Lily or Oyster Plant, is a striking, low-maintenance evergreen perennial valued for its bold foliage, resilience, and soil-stabilising functions. Native to southern Mexico and Central America, it thrives in warm climates, preferring part shade to full sun and well-drained soils. In tropical and subtropical parts of Australia, it can be used as a hardy groundcover, while in cooler regions it is often grown indoors or in sheltered microclimates.

The plant forms dense rosettes of sword-shaped leaves that are green above and rich purple underneath, creating dramatic colour contrast in the garden. Tiny, white flowers are tucked inside the leaf bases, giving rise to its common name “Moses in the Cradle.” The thick foliage helps to suppress weeds, retain soil moisture, and prevent erosion, making it a practical choice for regenerative landscaping.

While primarily grown for ornamental purposes, some anecdotal traditions suggest minor medicinal uses for Tradescantia species (such as topical applications for minor skin irritations), although there is limited scientific validation and use should be cautious, especially given reports of potential mild skin sensitivity in some people.

In permaculture gardens, Moses in the Cradle functions as a living mulch, a visually appealing understory plant, and a biodiversity supporter by providing shelter for insects. It is particularly useful in shaded or difficult garden areas where other plants may struggle.
