Description

Bush Cherry (Syzygium spp.), often referred to as Lilly Pilly, is a group of native Australian evergreen shrubs and small trees prized for their edible berries, dense growth habit, and ornamental appeal. Common species used in gardens include Syzygium australe, Syzygium paniculatum, and their many cultivars, all of which perform well in full sun to part shade and adapt to a variety of well-drained soils. They are especially popular in subtropical and coastal areas of Australia.

These plants produce glossy green foliage, often with coppery new growth, and clusters of white fluffy flowers in spring to summer, which attract bees and other pollinators. These are followed by bright pink to red berries (technically edible fruit), known for their crisp texture and mildly tart flavour. The berries can be eaten fresh or used in jams, chutneys, syrups, and cordials. While some varieties are sweeter than others, all are rich in vitamin C and antioxidants.

Bush Cherry has traditional significance for First Nations peoples, who used various Syzygium species as a seasonal bushfood. While some medicinal uses have been recorded anecdotally — such as for skin treatments or digestive issues — the plant is primarily grown today for its culinary and landscape value.

In permaculture and edible landscaping, Bush Cherry is ideal for use as a food-producing hedge, privacy screen, windbreak, or habitat plant. It responds well to pruning and can be maintained as a formal hedge or allowed to grow naturally into a small tree.
