Vermiculite

Description

Vermiculite is a naturally occurring mineral that expands when heated, forming lightweight, absorbent granules ideal for use in soil mixes, seed raising, and water retention applications. Sterile and pH neutral, vermiculite is a valuable additive for both beginner and experienced gardeners looking to improve soil structure and moisture management.

Its sponge-like texture helps retain water and nutrients in the root zone, reducing the frequency of watering and supporting more consistent plant growth. When mixed into potting soil or seed-starting media, vermiculite improves aeration and prevents compaction, promoting healthy root development. It is particularly beneficial for germinating seeds, propagating cuttings, or growing in small containers where moisture balance is critical.

Vermiculite does not decompose over time, making it a long-lasting, stable amendment in both indoor and outdoor growing systems. It can be used on its own for certain propagation methods or blended with compost, coir, sand, and other media to create custom soil mixes tailored to specific plant needs.

In permaculture and regenerative gardening, vermiculite is especially valued in systems where water conservation is important, or where highly friable, fluffy soils are required — such as for microgreens, seedlings, or delicate cuttings. While not a nutrient source itself, its ability to retain and slowly release water and minerals supports plant health and reduces nutrient leaching.
